Elizabeth
Regina.
Born on 7 September 1533, Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Her childhood was marked by the political and religious upheavals of Tudor England.
Elizabeth became queen in 1558 following the death of her half-sister Mary I. She ruled for almost forty-five years, developing a carefully cultivated royal image while navigating religious divisions, international conflict and the question of succession.
She died in 1603, bringing the Tudor dynasty to an end. Her reign subsequently became associated with a period of extraordinary literary and cultural production.
I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king.Elizabeth I · Tilbury · 1588
